2022 Water Blossom Celebration

By: Kim Kimpton

Come celebrate breath taking flower blooms at their peak during the Water Blossom Celebration on Saturday, August 6th from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The Celebration will take place at the Denver Botanic Gardens Hive Deck/Monet Pond area.

It’s that time of year when water lilies, cannas, and marginal plants alike are at their best. Together these plants in multiple ponds at The Gardens show off their vibrant colors and elegant shapes. Waterways were added to The Gardens in the early 1970’s as a unifying feature. But it is the water plants that take these features from sidelight to spotlight. Each pond is expertly designed to showcase the best in aquatic plants.

More than just pretty blooms, the Celebration is an opportunity to get inspired and learn more about water gardening. Chat with CWGS members pond side as they share unique characteristics of these special plants. Take a docent led tour of the water features and learn some of the unique secrets of lotus, Victoria water lilies, night bloomers, and more.

Delight in trying something new in your yard, garden, porch, or patio. Take away a free plant (while supplies last) to start your very own water garden. Take home information to ensure your water garden is successful. Better yet, become a CWGS member and have educational support you might want and be a part of the fun. Discover the joys of water gardening and why it is so positively addictive.

Experienced water gardeners? Come join your fellow water gardeners and enjoy the Celebration. Photograph your new favorite plants. It’s a shorter trip than flying to France. Here Denver Botanic Gardens’ ponds echo the beauty of Monet’s Giverny and your seat is already reserved!

Interested in volunteering? Whether you are new to water gardening or an experienced hand - consider volunteering. We have fun and you can learn from others as you volunteer. Contact Kim Kimpton at Kimkimpton1@gmail.com to find out your opportunities.

Come see the wide variety of water plants that thrive in our Colorado summers!

Save the Date - August 20th, Second Pond Side Event

By: Brenda Parsons-Hier

Please join us for our final Pond Side meeting of the year at Tom Taylor's Residence in Colorado Springs on Saturday, August 20th from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Peter and I went to Tom's when his yard was on the Pikes Peak Water Garden Society's Annual Pond Tour in the Colorado Springs area. His ponds, streams, plants, and fish are amazing and well worth the drive. Perhaps car pooling might work for you.

Tom's main pond of 20,000 gallons is home to approximately 70 Koi ranging in size up to 27 inches. The pond is set into a hillside with two additional 5,000 gallon ponds, three waterfalls, and two streams. There is an assortment of water plants including a number of water lilies. The pond is wheelchair accessible, however, there is a modestly steep incline to get to the pond. Access to the upper ponds is by flagstone steps that are not handicap accessible.

This is a potluck, so please bring an appetizer, salad, main dish or dessert to share, and what you want to drink. The Club will proved table-ware. Electricity and a gas grill will be available. Also, please bring you own chair.

Directions:

Take I-25 to Exit 141. Proceed west on Hwy 24 for 1.5 miles to 21st Street. Turn left on 21st Street for 1.4 miles. At the stoplight for Argus turn right. At the stop sign, turn right on Orion Drive and go 1.6 miles PAST Vista Grande Drive and Pollux Drive (ignore your GPS and do not turn on the first Vista Grande Drive ... it is a dead end!). At the intersection with Hydra Drive stay to the left and proceed about 200 yards west (downhill) to the driveway cut into the hillside on the left which is 599 Vista Grande Drive (Orion changes to Vista Grande just before my home). Look for the club's Pond Tour sign.

Two handicap parking spaces will be available in the driveway. Please call as you are coming up the hill if you will need handicap parking; all others are asked to park on the street.

We hope to see you there!
