2023 Colorado Water Garden Society Plant Sale

By: Vicki Aber

The Colorado Water Garden Society Plant Sale will be on Sunday, June 6th starting at 9:00 am for current CWGS members only. The Sale will open to the general public at 10:00 am. The Sale will be at The Hudson Gardens & Event Center located at 6115 S. Sante Fe Drive in Littleton. The location within Hudson Gardens will be the patio of the Business Office/Residence. You will park in the main parking lot and enter Hudson Gardens through the Welcome Center. If you are not familiar with where the Business Office/Residence is located, you can ask at the Welcome Center.

The Plant Sale Committee has been hard at work behind the scenes selecting the plants we order for our annual Sale. We expect to have a great selection of hardy and tropical aquatic plants.

There will be both hardy and tropical aquatic plants. There will also be fertilizer tablets for sale. A list of plants we are expecting is posted on the website. Remember this list is only what we ordered or expect to receive from donations. There is always a chance our suppliers will be out of a certain plant when we order it.

It takes a village to put on the Plant Sale – we need volunteers! On Saturday, we set everything up the Sale. We start at 9:00 am and are done by noon. We unpack boxes, label plants, and stage them for the Sale. On Sunday, we move the plants out into the Sale area starting at 8:00 am. During the Sale, we help shoppers pick out their plants, describe plant characteristics, market the Club marketing, and help at check out. The Sale usually wraps up sometime between 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. After the Sale is over, we need help getting everything picked up so we can leave the area as we found it. We are usually done with clean-up by 3:30 pm.

If you would like to help with the Sale, please let me know. You can call at (303) 423-9216 or email me at docvicki@msn.com. If we know who is coming, we can better plan who will help with what. As a bonus, you will ‘lily bucks’ for your help. For every hour you work, you get 2 lily bucks. Lily bucks can be used toward your purchases. There are also donuts provided both mornings and lunch on Sunday.

We also need donated plants. Our orders concentrate on plants we may not see often around here. To have some tried and true plants to offer people, especially newer growers, we need plants that grow well in our area that people have plenty of and are easy to grow. We ask that you bring any plants you wish to donate to the Sale by 10:00 am on Saturday, so we can get them labeled and priced accordingly. If you bring plants later, there is a good chance we may not have time to get them out for sale.

The Sale is a lot of work but also a lot of fun. We help people get what they need to make their water gardens successful and beautiful.

If you still have questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me. Again, my phone number is (303) 423-9216 and my email is docvicki@msn.com.

First Pond Side Meeting of 2023 on June 17th

By: Teresa Burkert

Summer events to be enjoyed by Colorado Water Garden Society members include Pond Side meetings in June and August and of course, the wonderful July Pond Tour and Picnic.

This year the June potluck and Pond Side meeting will be:

Saturday, June 17th
Noon to 3:00 pm
Featuring: potluck lunch, great discussions, and a greenhouse tour

Location:
Front Range Gardens
10195 Wadsworth Blvd.
Broomfield, Colorado 80021
(303) 469-3369

One of the great strengths of the Colorado Water Garden Society is the combined expertise and experience of its members. We love to get together, enjoy one another's company and talk plants, especially Water Plants of all types and sizes! Some of us have ponds, some have containers, and some have fish. If you are new to water gardens or wonderful long-term members, please join us! Bring any questions you may have; someone will have answers or tips to try! What is working well for you already this summer? Let us know! Guests are welcome.

If you wish to join us for the potluck, please bring an appetizer, salad, side dish, or dessert as well as your own beverage. Also bring a chair for yourself and your guest.

The Front Range Gardens is a 30,000 square foot greenhouse, locally owned and established in 1970. Along with a variety of water plants, it features annuals, vegetables, perennials, and shrubs. Most of their plants are grown on site. I have been very pleased with plants I have purchased there and this spring enjoyed the beautiful tulip and daffodil bulbs I bought from their open bins last fall. After the potluck, we will be treated to a tour of their greenhouse.

2023 CWGS Pond Tour July 15, 2023

By: Dennis Weatherman

Yes, it will soon be that time of year again to visit, view, and discuss water features with like-minded folks. This year we will be primarily in Central Denver, from Polo Club to west Denver and in between.

Tour hours are 10am to 4:30pm giving us plenty of time to enjoy ponds and water features we may not see otherwise. You may start your visits anywhere you wish depending on where you are coming from.

At 5:00 pm the after-tour picnic will be at the home of Jess Milano, near Federal and 6th. We ask attendees to pay $5 per person to help cover the cost of food and drinks. The Club will provide iced tea and lemonade, please feel free to bring your own drinks if you have a specific preference.

Further details will be in the newsletter in July, including addresses of tour stops. Mark your calendars for July 15, 2023!

International Water Garden Society (IWGS) Member Access to Website

By: Vicki Aber

Most of you have heard us talk about the IWGS, maybe came to a program where we reported on going to one of their yearly Symposia. Did you know that the Club maintains a membership in the IWGS? With our membership, members of our club have access to the IWGS website. There is a wealth of information on the site. There is a searchable database of plants, searchable old journals, and the newest journals as they come out. If you feel inclined, you can get information on the upcoming Symposium in Vancouver Canada and maybe join those of us that are going.

To access the IWGS website, please to to:

https://iwgs.org/

The Login is: CWGSAdmin
Password is: PurpleFantasy

Only one of our members can be logged in at a time, so if it won’t let you log in, wait a bit and you should be okay. We will update this Password from time to time. The new Password will be published in our Newsletter. Please don’t share this password with anyone else.

They also have a pretty active Facebook page with lots of pretty pictures and questions and answers from the true experts.

Speaking of Facebook, we could use some more activity on the CWGS site. If you are on Facebook, join our Club. If you already are part of our page, POST something! If Instagram is more you style, we also have an Instagram account.
