Fish & Ponds

There seems to be a myth about keeping fish with a water garden. Some who maintain fish in their water gardens find the fish eat or disturb the water plants, while others find no such problem. Many find their Koi love to disturb and eat their water plants. Sometimes adding more vegetative matter can help alleviate this problem, other times it may best to cover your pots with a substance such as chicken wire to keep your fish out of plant pots.

Ponds should be constructed to one’s own tastes and needs, with some basic understanding of fish needs. Fish need protection, space for movement, clean water, and some ice-free water. A fishpond should have some places where fish can hide to protect themselves from other animals and the Summer sun.
